The 60-second version for Austin

Which side of MoPac you live on matters less for roaches than how old your sewer line is and how many neighbors share your walls. Here is the fast read.

Prevention and a clean-out are two different jobs.

Roaches are already on the general pest plan for Austin homes, and there is no surcharge for them. Between scheduled visits, if the big ones start climbing out of the drain again, the re-treatment is free. The plan is built for prevention, though. An established German roach population in the kitchen needs the clean-out first, then the plan holds the line.

Our approach

How we get rid of cockroaches in Austin.

For American roaches the work happens outside. For German roaches it happens inside, with bait and precision rather than volume.

Bastion Pest Control technician in a blue glove holding a German cockroach on a gloved palm to identify the species 1

Identify and inspect

We identify the species and find the harborage: drains, meter boxes and mulch for American roaches, appliance voids and cabinet backs for German.

Bastion Pest Control technician applying cockroach gel bait with a syringe along the floor edge behind a refrigerator 2

Treat the harborage

Outdoor populations get the full TriBarrier plus drain and void treatment. Indoor German roaches get gel bait and dust placed precisely, not a fog.

Break the cycle

Roach eggs sit inside a hard case nothing penetrates, so we come back to catch each hatch. That follow-up is the whole difference between a dip and an ending.

Why roaches thrive in Austin.

Almost every roach call in Austin is one of two completely different situations, and confusing them is why homeowners fight the same problem for months. The first is the large American cockroach coming up out of the storm and sewer system, a genuine issue in the older central neighborhoods where clay tile sewer lines and street drains run under mature shade. The second is the German cockroach, which lives indoors permanently and is overwhelmingly what we treat in apartments, duplexes and downtown condos, where it moves between units through shared plumbing chases and wall voids.

Austin is really two pest environments split by the Balcones fault. West of MoPac the ground is thin soil over fractured limestone, riddled with voids and karst seams that hold cool, humid shelter right against foundations. East of it the ground is blackland prairie clay that holds water instead of draining it. Which side of town you live on changes which pests show up at your door and how they get in, and it is the first thing our technicians look at.

Roaches are a health problem with legs. They walk through sewage and then across the counter where you make breakfast, and their shed skins and droppings are a genuine asthma trigger, particularly for kids. This is one pest where the ick factor and the actual risk line up (CDC, cockroach allergen exposure).

Two soil types

Limestone west of MoPac, blackland clay east, different pests, different entry routes.

Older housing stock

1930s-60s homes in the central neighborhoods have far more gaps and harborage.

Mature canopy

Live oaks and pecans give climbing pests elevated routes and drop constant leaf litter.

Creeks and greenbelts

Shoal, Waller and Barton Creek corridors keep moisture and insect volume high year-round.

Seasonal pattern

When cockroaches peak in Austin.

Roaches in Austin split into two completely different problems. The big ones you meet in the garage at midnight live outside and come in when the weather turns nasty, which is most of the summer. German cockroaches are a different story entirely. They never go outside and they do not care what the calendar says.

Cockroach activity in Austin by month, outdoor species against German cockroaches Two patterns are shown. Outdoor cockroach species, meaning American, smokybrown and oriental, are lowest in January and February, climb through spring, and sit on a high plateau from June through September before dropping away in November and December. German cockroaches live indoors permanently and are shown as a flat line, level in every month of the year. The two series show the shape of each pattern and are not drawn to a shared population scale. January: very low activity February: low activity March: low activity April: moderate activity May: high activity June: very high activity, peak month July: very high activity, peak month August: very high activity, peak month September: very high activity, peak month October: high activity November: low activity December: low activity PEAK WINDOW JanFebMarAprMayJunJulAugSepOctNovDec lowhigh

Relative pattern for Central Texas, not a measured local count, and the two series are not drawn to a shared population scale. American, smokybrown and oriental cockroaches live mostly outdoors and move inside hunting food and water, so their numbers track heat and humidity. German cockroaches do not live outdoors in Texas at all, which is why their line is flat. Peak window
June to September

Hot and humid is the exact brief for the big outdoor species. Four solid months of them trying the back door.

What pushes them in
Heat and drought

When the yard dries out they come looking for water, and your kitchen is basically an oasis with a fridge.

The exception
German cockroaches

Indoors permanently, so no season touches them. If yours never ease off in winter, this is very likely why.

From real jobs

Every photo below came off a real Austin service call. Working out which species you have is not trivia, it decides the whole treatment, so it is worth two minutes of squinting.

Large American cockroach on a tile floor beside a baseboard under a kitchen sink, with plumbing and cleaning bottles behind it
American cockroach Under the kitchen sink

Big, reddish, and parked by the pipe gap. This is the one everyone calls a palmetto bug, and damp under a sink is its favorite address.

Several small German cockroaches and dark droppings on the floor and panel behind a refrigerator
German cockroaches Behind the refrigerator

Small, tan, two dark stripes behind the head. Several of them plus droppings means they are breeding back there, not just passing through.

Heavy German cockroach infestation with dozens of insects and droppings around a gas line behind a kitchen range
German cockroaches Behind the range

This is what a few unbothered months looks like. Numbers at this level need a proper baiting program, because a can of spray will only scatter them.

American cockroach on a bathroom ceiling next to an extractor vent, with a water stain visible on the ceiling
American cockroach Bathroom ceiling

Have a look at the water stain right next to it. A roach on the ceiling is usually a plumbing story before it is a pest story.

Large American cockroach on a painted porch post at dusk with patio furniture and a lit porch light behind
American cockroach Porch post after dark

Hanging around the porch light where the big ones spend their evenings. From here it is one propped-open door away from being an indoor problem.

Cluster of dark smokybrown cockroaches sheltering on a concrete pier in a crawl space under a deck, with insulation and webbing above
Smokybrown cockroaches Under the deck

A cluster tucked into the crawl space. Warm, damp and undisturbed is the entire shopping list, and this is where your indoor sightings come from.

Photographs by the Bastion Pest Control service team. The quick rule: small and tan with two stripes is a German cockroach breeding indoors, and anything big and reddish has almost certainly walked in from outside. Not sure? Text a photo to 843-480-8699 and we will tell you which one it is.

Know your pest

The roaches we find in Austin homes.

Geography decides most Austin roach identification. Older central neighborhoods with clay tile sewer lines send up American and smokybrown roaches from the drains and the live oak canopy. Apartments, duplexes and downtown condos carry German roaches between units through shared plumbing chases. West of MoPac, limestone voids keep the outdoor species cool and close to the slab. Your technician confirms the species on site before anything gets treated, because guessing wrong wastes a month.

American cockroach (Periplaneta americana) on weathered wood, showing its large reddish-brown body and pale-edged shield behind the head

American cockroach

Periplaneta americana

The big reddish one people call a palmetto bug, and the one Austin generates in volume. It lives in the storm and sewer system, in the mulch along Shoal and Waller Creek, and in irrigation boxes, then comes up a floor drain or a dry P-trap. Central neighborhoods built before modern sealing give it the most ways in. It does not breed indoors here, which is why sealing and exterior work beat indoor spraying. American cockroach identification guide (Texas A&M)

American cockroach. Large, reddish-brown, with a pale-edged shield behind the head.
German cockroach (Blattella germanica) on wood debris, showing its tan body and two dark stripes behind the head

German cockroach

Blattella germanica

Small, tan, two dark stripes behind the head, and the only roach on this list that treats an Austin condo as a permanent address. It moves between units through plumbing chases and wall voids, so a spotless downtown kitchen can inherit the problem from a neighbor. Interior gel baiting is the fix, and in multi-unit buildings we will tell you plainly what one treated unit can and cannot achieve. German cockroach identification guide (Texas A&M)

German cockroach. Small, tan, with two dark stripes. The indoor breeder.
Smokybrown cockroach (Periplaneta fuliginosa) on bark, showing its uniform glossy dark mahogany body

Smokybrown cockroach

Periplaneta fuliginosa

Uniform glossy mahogany, no pale markings, and a strong flier. This is the canopy species, and the mature live oaks and pecans over Hyde Park, Rosedale, Tarrytown and Clarksville are exactly its habitat. It nests in tree holes, leaf litter and attic voids, then comes down a soffit gap or in through an attic vent. Screening the vents and clearing gutter debris does more than any interior treatment. Texas cockroach species guide (Texas A&M)

Smokybrown cockroach. Uniform glossy mahogany, no pale markings.
Oriental cockroach (Blatta orientalis) on a dry stem, showing its stout, glossy near-black body

Oriental cockroach

Blatta orientalis

Stout, near black, and slow compared with the others. It wants damp: floor drains, water heater closets, crawl spaces and the low ground near a creek. East of I-35 the blackland clay holds water after a storm, and the shrink and swell cycle in that soil keeps a gap open around the foundation for it to use. Drying the harborage is the whole treatment.

Oriental cockroach. Stout and near-black. The damp-and-drains species.
Brown-banded cockroach (Supella longipalpa) on weathered wood, showing the pale bands across its wings

Brown-banded cockroach

Supella longipalpa

Roughly German cockroach size, but with two pale bands running across the wings. This one is an indoor specialist that does not particularly care about your kitchen. It will settle in a bedroom, a wardrobe or a home office instead, gluing egg cases to the underside of furniture, shelves and picture frames. That is exactly why it gets missed for months. Brown-banded cockroach guide (Texas A&M)

Brown-banded cockroach. The two pale bands across the wings are the tell.

A note on bites and stings. Reactions vary from person to person, and any bite or sting can cause a serious reaction in someone sensitive to it. Nothing here is medical advice. If you are bitten or stung and feel unwell, or the reaction spreads or does not settle, contact a doctor or Poison Control. If breathing or swallowing is affected, treat it as an emergency and call 911.

Warning signs

What tells us you have a breeding population.

An older Rosedale house probably has a tourist from the sewer line. A downtown condo probably has a breeding population next door. Either way, phone us and walk through what you found. Most of the time we can tell you before anyone drives over whether it needs same-day attention or can wait for the scheduled visit.

  • Pepper-like droppings in drawers or cabinet corners
  • Small tan roaches when you turn the kitchen light on
  • Brown, oval egg cases in cabinet seams
  • A musty, oily odor in the kitchen or pantry
  • Roaches at the dishwasher, fridge motor or under the sink
  • Shed skins in cabinet corners or drawer tracks
  • Large roaches climbing out of an old clay-tile sewer cleanout
  • Sightings in a condo or duplex that shares plumbing with neighbors

Where we treat cockroaches in Austin.

Housing age and density sort Austin roach calls for us. Hyde Park, Rosedale and Travis Heights run on older sewer lines under heavy oak canopy, so American and smokybrown roaches turn up in bathrooms and garages. Around the Domain area and South Lamar, apartment and condo density means German roaches moving unit to unit. A cockroach exterminator in Austin needs to know which of those you are calling from before the truck leaves.

Questions Austin homeowners ask about cockroaches.

How much does cockroach control cost in Austin, TX?

There are two answers because there are two jobs. Ongoing prevention is part of the general pest plan, which starts at $66 a month for a single-family home in Austin. Clearing an active infestation is separate work: two treatments thirty days apart, $449 in total. If you already have roaches, that clean-out is the one you need, and the monthly plan is what keeps them out afterwards. A heavy German roach infestation needs additional visits in the first month to break the hatch cycle, and those are included in the plan rather than billed separately. We confirm your exact price with a free on-site quote.

What is the difference between the big roaches and the little ones?

The big reddish-brown ones are American cockroaches, and they live outside: storm drains, sewer lines, meter boxes and mulch. They wander in. They are not breeding in your kitchen, which is genuinely good news.

How long does it take to get rid of cockroaches?

American roaches usually stop turning up within a week or two once the exterior barrier and drains are treated. German roaches take longer, because you are waiting out the egg cases as well as the adults.

Why do I have roaches when my house is clean?

Because the roaches Austin homes get most are outdoor animals having a look around. American and smokybrown roaches live in the storm drains, the creek mulch and the tree canopy, and they come in through a gap, a dry floor drain or an attic vent whichever way you keep house. A spotless kitchen in Tarrytown with sixty-year-old plumbing penetrations and a live oak on the roofline will see more of them than a messy one in a sealed new build. Cleanliness matters for German roaches, which breed indoors. It has very little to do with the big ones.

Is roach treatment kid and pet friendly? Do we have to leave?

It is pet and kid friendly, and you do not need to leave. We use gel baits and dusts placed inside cabinet voids, appliance housings and wall voids, areas your family does not contact, rather than fogging living space. There is no need to empty your kitchen or vacate the house.

Do you treat apartments and rentals in Austin?

Yes, and the split matters for who books it. We work for owners, property managers and tenants, and in a multi-unit building the honest answer is that treating one unit rarely holds, because German roaches travel the shared wall voids and plumbing chases. If you rent, start with your landlord or manager so the adjoining units get done in the same pass. If you own the building, we will quote the block rather than the door. Either way the call is free: 843-480-8699.

What keeps sending big roaches into my old Hyde Park bathroom?

Central Austin drains are older than most of the people using them. Clay tile sewer lines and street drains under mature shade stay damp and cracked, and American roaches live in them in numbers. One climbs up through a floor drain or a dry trap, you find it at midnight, and it is not breeding indoors. We treat the exterior, the drains and the entry points, and the midnight visits stop.

Is roach treatment different west of MoPac on the limestone side?

Somewhat. The limestone west of MoPac is fractured and full of voids, and those cool, humid seams sit right against foundations in places like Westlake and Steiner Ranch. Outdoor roaches shelter there and come in through weep holes and garage-door gaps rather than up through drains. So the exterior barrier gets more attention and the drain work gets less. Indoors, a German roach problem is treated the same on either side of town.
