Scorpions in Central Texas.
The striped bark scorpion is all over the Hill Country, and the unsettling part is that it climbs. Walls, attics, ceilings. That is how one ends up in the bathtub, or worse, in a shoe.
Scorpions are hunting insects, not you. Take away the food, seal the entry points, treat where they shelter, and your house stops being worth the climb. If you are still at the earlier question, we answered it separately: are there scorpions in Austin?

Seasonal pattern
When scorpions peak in Central Texas.
Scorpions do not bother you for most of the year and then cram everything into one short, brutal stretch. Barely a whisper in February, absolutely everywhere by July. It is almost entirely a night shift too, which is why the classic Central Texas introduction happens barefoot at midnight on the way to the kitchen.
- Peak season
- June to August
- Hot, dry, and strictly after dark. Three months doing the work of twelve.
- Why they come in
- Water, not warmth
- In a dry spell they are hunting moisture, which is exactly why the sightings happen in bathrooms.
- The fall switch
- October & November
- Activity drops but the motive changes. Now they want somewhere to overwinter, and a wall void suits perfectly.
Warning signs
Midnight sightings and other tells.
Scorpions in tubs, sinks, or closets
Glowing shapes under UV light at night
Daylight under the garage door sweep
Finding one in a shoe, once, is enough
Where it was tells us more than what it looked like: a bathtub in July means they are hunting water, a closet in October means they are moving in for winter. Call or text 843-480-8699 with the room and the month, and we can usually tell you whether it needs same-day attention.

Where scorpions actually turn up.
Every photo here came off a real service visit around the Austin metro. Look past the scorpion to where it is standing. Door frames, thresholds, worn door sweeps and the joint where the slab meets the wall. Scorpions do not wander in at random, they use a gap, and the gap is the fixable part.
Right against the door frame where the sweep has worn through. That gap under a garage door is the single most common way they get in.
Following the seam where the slab meets the wall, past a cable penetration and a stack of boxes. Scorpions travel edges, they rarely cross open floor.
Tucked at the edge of the mat with the leaf litter. A doormat is a flat, dark, undisturbed object, which is exactly what they hunt for at sunrise.
Already inside and working the door frame. Once one is past the threshold it keeps to the baseboards and the trim rather than the middle of the room.
Caught out in the open, which usually means it got startled. This is the one people photograph at midnight on the way to the kitchen.
Noticeably darker and thicker set than the others here. That build points toward the cave scorpion side of things, though we would confirm it in person rather than from a photo.

Sealing matters more here than spraying. A scorpion gets in through the same gaps everything else uses, so the visit that finds and closes them is the one that stops the sightings.

Scorpion control, answered straight.
What months are scorpions worst in Central Texas?
June through August, and it is not close. Activity is very low through winter, climbs steeply from April, then spikes hard across the summer before dropping away through October and November. Almost all of it happens after dark, because striped bark scorpions are nocturnal. They spend daylight hours wedged into rock crevices, under bark, beneath stones and inside anything flat and undisturbed.
Why do scorpions come inside during summer?
They are after water rather than warmth. Texas A&M AgriLife makes the point that scorpions dislike both very cold and very hot conditions, and that during hot dry weather they will seek out water and somewhere more hospitable. Your house is cooler than the yard and has reliable moisture, which is why summer sightings cluster in bathrooms, kitchens, laundry rooms and anywhere with a drain.
Are scorpions in Texas dangerous?
The striped bark scorpion is the species you are most likely to meet in Central Texas. A sting is genuinely painful and is usually described as comparable to a wasp sting, with local pain and swelling. Reactions vary a lot between people though, and any sting can cause a serious reaction in someone sensitive to it. Stings to young children, older adults, anyone with a known allergy, or anyone who feels unwell afterwards warrant a call to a doctor or Poison Control. If breathing or swallowing is affected, treat it as an emergency and call 911.
Where do scorpions hide in a house?
Think tight, dark and undisturbed. They flatten into surprisingly small gaps, so we check wall voids, weep holes, attic spaces, the undersides of stored boxes, behind baseboards, inside shoes and under anything left flat on a garage floor. Outdoors it is rock features, landscape stone, firewood stacks, loose bark and the gap under siding. In this part of Texas the limestone itself provides more daytime harborage than any of us would like.
Do scorpions go away in winter?
They go quiet rather than away. Scorpions overwinter by dropping their metabolic rate right down and sheltering somewhere protected, which is often a wall void or an attic if they have found a way in. So a mild January with almost no sightings does not mean the property is clear. It usually means they are sitting still somewhere warm, waiting for spring.
How much does scorpion control cost in the Austin area?
Scorpion control is included in our recurring general pest plan starting at $66 per month for a single-family home, alongside ants, spiders, roaches, wasps and rodents. Scorpions lean heavily on exclusion work, so sealing weep holes, door sweeps and utility gaps matters as much as anything we spray. A bigger house or a rockier lot moves the number. We confirm the exact price with a free on-site quote and there is no inspection fee.
