Austin spans limestone hills in the west, blackland prairie in the east, and a dense urban core in between — which means no two neighborhoods here have quite the same pest problem.
West of MoPac the ground turns to shallow limestone and the pest profile shifts to scorpions and spiders working through rock fissures and slab cracks. East of I-35 the heavy blackland clay shrinks and swells with the seasons, opening gaps around foundations that ants and roaches walk straight through.
The older central neighborhoods — Hyde Park, Tarrytown, Rosedale, Clarksville — combine mature tree canopy with housing stock that predates modern sealing. That is ideal for roof rats, which travel branch to roofline and nest in attics. Add the greenbelts and Shoal and Waller creeks, and mosquitoes stay in play most of the year.
